Understanding nonsense correlation between (independent) random walks in finite samples

چکیده
Abstract Consider two independent random walks. By chance, there will be spells of association between them where the processes move in same direction, or opposite direction. We compute probabilities length longest spell such for a given sample size, and discuss measures like mean mode exact distributions. observe that long (relative to small sizes) occur frequently, which explains why nonsense correlation short walks is rule rather than exception. The figures are compared with approximations. Our finite analysis as well approximations rely on older results popularized by Révész (Stat Pap 31:95–101, 1990, Statistical Papers ). Moreover, we consider correlated Approximate Monte Carlo results.

Random Walks on Finite Groups
Markov chains on finite sets are used in a great variety of situations to approximate, understand and sample from their limit distribution. A familiar example is provided by card shuffling methods. From this viewpoint, one is interested in the “mixing time” of the chain, that is, the time at which the chain gives a good approximation of the limit distribution. A remarkable phenomenon known as t...
متن کاملOn Infection Spreading and Competition between Independent Random Walks
We study the models of competition and spreading of infection for infinite systems of independent random walks. For the competition model, we investigate the question whether one of the spins prevails with probability one. For the infection spreading, we give sufficient conditions for recurrence and transience (i.e., whether the origin will be visited by infected particles infinitely often a.s.).

متن کاملCorrelation matrices of continuous-time random walks
We present eigenvalue spectra of correlation matrices of synthetic uncorrelated continuous-time random walks. Processes of this kind are used e.g. to model high-frequency financial time series, but are also rigorously connected to the time and space fractional diffusion equation. A new method for the fast production of Mittag-Leffler random numbers already used by us to solve the fractional dif...
متن کاملOscillatory correlation of delayed random walks
We investigate analytically and numerically the statistical properties of a random walk model with delayed transition probability dependence (delayed random walk). The characteristic feature of such a model is the oscillatory behavior of its correlation function. We investigate a model whose transient and stationary oscillatory behavior is analytically tractable. The correspondence of the model...
